Billboard Techniques

In this example, each tree is modelled from several billboards. In this close-up, you can see that the leaves are flat areas of texture.

Here there is a rapidly moving plane of vertical billboard, which carries a pattern to simulate a dusty storm. In the actual game, there are several passing by in quick succession and constantly. Only when you look in the direction of motion (as in this example) do you see how it works; otherwise it is quite convincing. The billboard in front of the character reveals the effect but there is another one between the viewer and the character which shows how convincing it can be.
