Robot Transparency

Article four of the EPSRC Principles of Robotics asserts that Robots are manufactured artefacts. They should not be designed in a deceptive way to exploit vulnerable users; instead their machine nature should be transparent.

Experimental Approach

We are investigating the mental models that humans have of robots when they encounter them, and whether we can improve these models by increasing the level of transparency.

The R5 Robot

The R5 Robot is a low cost maker platform designed to run simple experiments with humans.

R5 Robot

The action selection within R5 is provided by the Instinct Planner, a new extended implementation of POSH written in C++ for the Arduino microcontroller.

We use R5 to run experiments with humans. We use ABOD3 to provide a view of the internal robot state and action selection process as the robot operates.
