Applying Neural Networks in Health Psychology Ian Walker, Bath Psychology Many aspects of psychology, particularly in applied fields, are reliant upon relatively simple statistical models. We have been exploring the utility of various function estimators for these fields and here I describe our work with one of these - the neural network. Neural networks appear to be particularly suited to this sort of application because not only do they provide measures of how predicatable an outcome is, but also allow useful secondary analyses that identify coherent groups of individuals. Using data from studies of testicular cancer, workplace stress, and eating disorders, I show how two types of neural network have allowed targetted health interventions to be developed.
